D.O. Penedés

The region is truly one of the most popular and ancient areas of viticulture in Europe.  It is dotted with quaint villages, picturesque churches and a multitude of vineyards. The latter grow a wide selection of grape varieties including Macabeo, Paradella, Xarello, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Penedes is a privileged location which is renowned for winemaking and a variety of soils, differences in climate and results in a thousand differing aromas, bodies and structures.

Location

Penedes is a wide-open region located southwest of Barcelona. The wine region lies between two coastal provinces – Barcelona which is in the north and Tarragona which is in the south.

It is set between the blue Mediterranean and the Garraf Massif and Penedes is split into three district zones: The Penedes Superior, Maritim and Central.

Climate

The region can boast of its diversity of wine styles thanks to the Mediterranean climate. With warm summers, mild winters and moderate rainfall which is mainly in the spring and the autumn months.

What makes the region unique is its differing micro-climates. The proximity to the sea and the different altitudes of each area allows its winemakers the opportunity to generate a relatively wide range of wine styles.

Cellar

The region is home to hundreds of wineries. Extra Spain Wine’s winery is in the heart of Penedes Superior. To experience the best winemaking traditions and soak up the atmosphere of the region we invite you to savour wines from our cellars.

Wine

The Penedes wineries have been producing fine wines for centuries. The regions enjoy a wide variety of wines including dry reds and whites, sparkling whites and roses. They are made using both the Traditional Method and the Champagne Method, which is also known as Cava.

The principal white grapes include Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Parellada, Subirat-Parent and Chardonnay, the reds are Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha Tinta and Cariñena.

Champagne

Although Penedes covers all types of wine styles, its primary product is Cava. This is a sparkling wine which is made in the Champagne Method. More than 80% of Cava cellars are located within the DO.

Local Cava is made with the Catalan grapes – Xarel-lo and Paradella and is often blended with Chardonnay and Macabeo.  It is an iconic fine sparkling wine from the Mediterranean region which has a unique spectrum of aromas and flavours.

Ribera del Duero, Rueda

The winemaking regions of D.O. Ribera del Duero and D.O. Rueda are located on high plateaus along the Duero River. They are in the Castilla y León region in North-Central Spain, two hours north of Madrid. Their wines reflect ancient traditions and are very uniquely linked to the specific locations and the regions host more than 370 wineries.

Most of the Ribera del Duero wine is made mainly from Tempranillo grapes and over 95% of the vineyards are planted with these thick-skinned black grapes. The grapes ripen early to survive short growing seasons but are also capable of producing complex wines that develop over a long period.

In Rueda, the wines of Verdejo grapes feed off the rocky soils to yield herbaceous, aromatic whites. Balanced and refreshing Verdejo wine can alter from pale straw to a bright yellow colour with tender aromas of fennel and white peach.

Rioja

The region which takes its name after the Oja river is situated on a plateau south of the Cantabrian Mountains. Rioja is one of Spain's leading wine regions and is predominantly known for its Tempranillo grapes, its fine tannins and its outstanding aging capacity.

This world-renowned wine region mainly presents berry-scented, barrel-aged red wines made from Tempranillo and Garnacha. The wine is known for its aromas of strawberry, cherry, and tanned leather when it has aged.

Castilla-La Mancha

La Mancha, with its many acres of vineyards, is the largest wine region in the whole of Europe. The region has a long winemaking tradition as grape growing was undertaken there by the Romans and The Moors.

Over the past few decade’s winemaking has significantly improved. Today the region’s vineyards produce high-quality wine from local grape varieties such as Airen, Macabeo, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Garnacha.

Albariño, Galicia

This wine region, which is situated in the northwest corner of Spain, is surprisingly lush and green. Galicia’s cool, maritime climate makes it more hospitable for white wines.

Albariño is the most important white grape variety in Galicia. Classic notes for Albariño are in abundance: light-to-medium in body, high in acidity, and very fragrant, with notes of peach, Meyer lemon, and apple blossom.
